The 1st Ramsden an Downham Scout Group Badge.

Since the formation of the 1st Ramsden and Downham Scout Group in 1912, the following people have received honours from the Chief Scouts.

This award is made for conduct involving a high degree of courage, endurance, initiative and devotion to duty, often under suffering.

The Silver Acorn is not normally awarded until after at least a Medal of Merit has been gained and a further five years' service has been completed. Thus, it is seldom awarded for less than 20 years service, which should be specially distinguished and appreciably better than outstanding.

 

Bar to the Award for Merit

This award is made for a minimum of five years additionally outstanding service

Alan Thoroughgood - Assistant Scout Leader - 1st August 2008

When Alan was awarded his Bar to the Award for Merit, he had been Scout Leader at 1st Great Burstead and Assistant Scout Leader at 1st Ramsden and Downham for an amazing 35 years. He has helped with District Cycling events, District Patrol Leaders' Courses, District Scout Camps. March 2009 will mark Alan's 15th anniversary of joining 1st Ramsden and Downham Scout Group.

The Medal of Merit is awarded for a period of not less than 10 years outstanding service whilst holding adult appointments.

Stanley Harvey - Cub Scout Master - 23rd April 1953

Stanley was invested as a Wolf Cub on 5th November 1927, he later joined the Scout Troop on 31st December 1931. He was part of the Essex Scout Marathon winning team in 1933 and led the team to 3rd place in 1934 and again in 1935. On 5th September 1938 he was one of the Founder members of the Rover Scout Crew - then the oldest section in Scouting.  Later that year, he became Akela - the Cub Scout Master. His service as Akela spanned 15 years - apart from the period of World War II when he was serving with the Royal Air Force. He was presented with the Medal of Merit at the St. George's Day Parade in 1953, which saw his final service to our Scout Group prior to his moving to Chichester. He returned for our 75th Anniversary Church Service in November 1993
